Bias and bigotry in academia
« on: July 30, 2010, 06:32:38 AM »
Quote
As Nieli puts it, "Being Hispanic conferred an admissions boost over being white ... equivalent to 130 SAT points (out of 1,600), while being black rather than white conferred a 310-point SAT advantage. Asians, however, suffered an admissions penalty compared to whites equivalent to 140 SAT points."

"To have the same chance of gaining admission as a black student with a SAT score of 1100, a Hispanic student otherwise equally matched in background characteristics would have to have 1230, a white student a 1410 and an Asian student a 1550."

may i ask what your thoughts are on this?

these are mine:
on one hand, i think white skin is still more of an asset than a liability. i think whites have a greater advantage as far as education goes, and so it may be easier for them to score higher on the SATs than other races. on the other hand, i think expecting more of whites is unfare to all races.

i went to school with a black lady who got an F on a final paper. she was crying--because she was mad. she said she had never gotten an F on a paper in her life. i did not talk to the prof who graded her paper, but i did talk to the prof who talked to the prof who graded her paper. according to the prof i talked to, the paper was pretty bad. no research; bad grammer; bad spelling. earlier in the semester i had read where teachers will give allowances to non-white students and let things slide with them that they wouldn't let slide with white students. so i wondered if this lady's papers had always been bad, but allowances were made for her because of the color of her skin? and then a teacher came along and held her to the same standards as all the other students? i don't know. but it made me wonder. and it made me wonder who we are actually helping by lowering the bar for non-white students.

just some thoughts.

If you are wanting to gain admission to a state college, it is definitely advantageous to be a black person, especially a black female or a back football player.

If you are poor, first generation college student, have some sort of LD and black, the educational world is your oyster, baby.  Now, add to that all that if you are gay, watch out!  Talk about getting a free pass.

Being white makes it significantly more difficult to get into state colleges.

Once in college, there are all kinds of special accommodations made; it is almost impossible to fail if you are a minority of any color in America.

i've always, ALWAYS been against affirmative action, and this is why. it just really ticks me off that there is no equal playing field. i think all college admissions should be fixed so that the people reviewing them are totally unable to distinguish a person's gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, religious leanings, political views etc.

that means no names.
that means no identifying any sort of community service or extra-curricular activities.
that means nothing but a person's academics should be considered.

and i really hate that because i think life experience is very important, like community service and volunteer things that one has done. but i'm so sick and tired of this affirmative action crap which isn't affirmative at all. it still promotes racial bias and a hundred other things that shouldn't be promoted.

well, maybe not a hundred.

Because generally they are intelligent and hard workers; much of this is the result of their culture:  very disciplined and family-oriented.  The same can be said about Jews, by the way.  lol

by the way, i'm really curious as to why asians are the only minority that seems to be discriminated against?
