Before I became a Christian (over 35 years ago) I was a spiritualist medium. I thought I was a Christian, thought I loved God and thought I was serving God.
One day I was sitting reading an occult book, when out of the blue God spoke. It wasn't a physically audible voice, but clearly audible in the spirit - and I was used to hearing in the spirit realm - and totally unlike anything I had ever heard before. Almost overwhelming power and authority was coupled with almost overwhelming love.
All He said was, "That is wrong!" The next day I called the head medium of the circle with which I had been involved and told her I would not be coming any more. I stopped being a speaking medium, and stopped using psychic powers.
However, I was also a healing medium, and since healing looks good I thought that must be from God, so kept doing it (remember, I thought I was a Christian.) The next 16 months were a time of total chaos and disaster in my life, as I sat on the fence between God and the devil.
At the end of that time, I heard about an Anglican minister in a town I was visiting who was involved in healing ministry. Thinking he was doing the same thing as me, I went to talk to him in the hope that he might be able to teach me some stuff. When he realized that the healing I was talking about was not divine but occult, he grabbed his Bible, opened it at Deuteronomy 18:9-12 and read me these verses which speak against all the occult practices, and end by saying (in the RSV, which he used) that those who practice such things are an abomination to the Lord.
That totally rocked me to my socks, and two days later I went back and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. The day I was saved, God called me to preach. Three days later He baptized me in the Holy Spirit. Within 6 weeks I was in Bible college, and within 6 months I had begun my preaching ministry.
